My Year in Writing: 2022

SEA books published in 2022.

Now is the time, between my birthday and the end of the year, when I take stock of my year in writing. It’s been a pretty productive year, considering it also included a move from Brooklyn to the Berkshires:

What a year! I am exceedingly grateful to everyone who has supported my writing over the past year. As Walter Lowenfels wrote, “One reader is a miracle; two, a mass movement.”

Like I said last year, I feel like I’ve been blessed by a mass miracle this year!

    Hello Scott, A  Happy (belated) birthday. Yes, you’ve had yourself a very productive year — much well-deserved positive activity surrounding the publishing of Wine-Dark Sea. I’ve so enjoyed my repeated reading of this book and continue to be taken by your new directions, especially in the realm of translation and the connection to your Azorean roots. When I first read the book I was amazed that it was a “new and selected”. This made me re-read much of what I have in my SEA archives. And doing this revealed that the time was right for this retrospective addition to the new work. I hadn’t put everything together quite like that before and did it in my best attempt at chronological order. It was a treat to do this “survey” and to, once again, experience the early strength and be newly awed by your continued poetic growth. The accolades you’ve received with the publication of WDS are well-deserved and I’m honored to own it. While I was going through my SEA archives I got to thinking that it might be time for you to consider where the actual (wine dark) SEA archives might end up. I don’t know if this is something on your agenda. I’ve gathered my holdings and prepared a listing for your edification. It is probably mostly stuff you also have stashed away somewhere. There is one item where I think I am the exclusive owner. It is the “Burroughs Adding Machine Tape Roll Pome to jack langerak.” Remember that? What an awesome early project. I’ve recently re-read this and found some great moments there. It’s a jazzy, playful riffing where one thing leads to another and signs of the times float by. As a “tape roll” poem it is still in pretty good physical shape (I’ve had to change the rubber band holding things together a couple of times by now). Congratulations on everything Scott. I find it, in my own way, fulfilling to have been there from the beginning, to have been able to witness the growth over the years and to have been rewarded by the continued awe your work and all that you bring to it inspires. My best for a robust continuation of all you have going on. Jack
